The Statistical Society of Australia’s Early Career and Student Statisticians Network (ECSSN) and the New Zealand Statistical Association (NZSA) present: Getting to Know: The Australian Bureau of Statistics.

  • Thursday, 4 May at 2pm AEST

In this seminar, Claire Clarke will give a brief overview of the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the work done by statisticians and data scientists there. She will outline the Data Graduate recruitment process and the ABS graduate development program, as well as other opportunities for careers at the ABS.

Benjamin Long will give some insights into his experiences as a graduate statistician at the ABS.

About the presenters:

Claire joined the ABS as part of the 2001 graduate cohort, and has worked in a range of positions in the Methodology Division on projects that have covered sample design and selection, dealing with missing data, applications of natural language processing, and the use of machine learning for anomaly detection and data cleaning amongst many others.  Claire is currently acting director of the Methodology Futures section, a team focused on the use of large administrative datasets and data science techniques in the creation of statistics, and she was the chair of the 2023 APS Data Graduate recruitment stream.

Benjamin graduated from the University of New South Wales with a degree in statistics and accounting in 2021. He joined the Methodology Division through the ABS Graduate program in February 2022. Since then, he has worked on several different projects involving time-to-event data analysis, big data, machine learning, and is currently working on the production of life tables and Bayesian modelling.
