DESCRIPTION:The Australian Data Science Network teamed up with the Statistical Society of Australia for a special “World Statistics Day” event – you to an engaging online panel discussion on a topic of growing significance: trust in data. \nOur expert panel\, representing a broad spectrum of experience across government\, academia and industry\, explored the real-world challenges they face in building and maintaining trust in data. The session also examined how emerging technologies\, evolving data ecosystems and societal expectations are reshaping the landscape of data integrity and transparency. \nVIDEO & PODCAST\n \nOur Presenters:\nDr Lucy Farrell is Director of Data Strategy in the Australian Centre for Disease Control Establishment Strategy Branch at the Australian Government Department of Health\, Disability and Ageing. In this role she is responsible for leading strategic reforms to improve national coordination\, sharing and use of public health data\, including through legislative reform\, governance\, methodology and technology. Prior to this role Lucy worked at the Australian Bureau of Statistics in analytical and methodology roles. Lucy is particularly interested the political and social dimensions of evidence use: what makes data meaningful\, usable and powerful in shaping better outcomes for communities. \nAssociate Professor Kalinda Griffiths is a Yawuru woman living and working on Larrakia Country. She is an epidemiologist and the Director of Poche SA+NT at Flinders University with research focused on the quality and governance of Indigenous population level data\, the measurement of health disparities\, and the improvement of health services and outcomes. She has played a leading role in guiding policy on data systems and health and wellbeing reporting. She is an NHMRC Leadership Fellow and senior Atlantic Fellow for Social Equity. In addition\, she holds a visiting fellowship at the Centre for Big Data Research in Health at UNSW and an honorary fellowship at the Menzies School of Health Research where she co-leads the Ramaciotti Training Centre. \nDr Ben Harrap is Vice President of the Statistical Society of Australia and a biostatistician who loves all things data. They’ve worked in many data contexts\, from clinical trials and observational research to administrative data and large data linkage projects. Ben currently works at Yardhura Walani on the Mayi Kuwayu National Study of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Wellbeing\, where they oversee the end-to-end process of survey design\, data collection and management\, and statistical analysis\, with Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Indigenous Data Governance being integral the whole way through. \nSimon Jackman is a leading analyst of public opinion\, elections and electoral systems and an Honorary Professor at the University of Sydney. After doctoral study at the University of Rochester and Princeton University\, Jackman was a professor at the University of Chicago and Stanford University in political science and statistics\, returning to Australia in 2016. Jackman is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia\, and the Society for Political Methodology and is the author of Bayesian Analysis for the Social Sciences (2009; Wiley). His recent work centres on the analysis of surveys and corrections for non-response\, machine learning for predictive modelling and integrating LLMs into the analysis of social media and news. \nDr Sue Keay is Director of the UNSW AI Institute and an expert in robotics\, AI\, and automation. She founded Robotics Australia Group and leads initiatives that translate research into real-world impact. A fellow of ATSE\, she serves on multiple advisory boards\, including Visionary Machines. Sue is a member of the Kingston AI Group and Chief Executive Women. She holds a PhD in Earth Sciences (ANU)\, an MBA from the University of Queensland\, and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute for Company Directors. \nDr Aaron Snoswell is a senior research fellow in AI accountability at the QUT Generative AI Lab. His research uses computational and sociotechnical approaches to evaluate and better understand the knowledge and behaviour of Large Language Models. Aaron received his PhD in computer science in 2022 from University of Queensland. Prior to academia\, Aaron worked across industry as a mechatronic engineer in medical device research and development\, pilot and astronaut training\, and software engineering. \nThe event will be moderated by Associate Professor Lynne Giles\, President of the Statistical Society of Australia and an Associate Professor of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health at The University of Adelaide. She has held various roles at the University\, and is currently Chair of the School’s Research Committee and Acting Program Director of postgraduate programs in biostatistics. She has served the Statistical Society of Australia in a range of roles at branch and national level since joining SSA back in 1990\, and is our new President for 2024-2026. Lynne teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Bachelor of Health and Medical Sciences\, the Master of Biostatistics and the Master of Public Health at The University of Adelaide. She has been a Chief Investigator on Category 1 funded research of > $25 million to date\, and has authored > 140 peer-reviewed publications\, with a H-index of 45. \n

Light refreshments will be served from 5pm. \nWhether you’re a researcher\, student\, or simply interested in the latest scientific advancements\, this hybrid event is not to be missed! \nWe are currently living through an unprecedented transformation of medicine\, driven by rapid technological change across multiple fields. SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Dealing with Sensitive Data
DESCRIPTION:AMSI Winter School Public Lecture \n\nGuest Speaker: Distinguished Professor Kerrie Mengersen\, Director of the QUT Centre for Data Science\n\nDealing with Sensitive Data: Many datasets of interest to statisticians are subject to privacy conditions. This can constrain access\, analysis\, sharing and release of results. In this presentation\, we will consider two ways in which this issue might be addressed. The first is through federated learning\, in which the analysis is undertaken in such a way that the data remain in situ and private. The second is synthetic generation of the data\, such that the simulated data retains salient characteristics but retains the required privacy. We provide some extensions to the class of models that can be considered in federated learning\, and an overview of synthetic generation of tabular data. SUMMARY:Research Bazaar (ResBaz) Queensland
DESCRIPTION:ResBaz is a worldwide festival promoting the digital literacy at the centre of modern research. Throughout 2023\, events will be held at a number of university campuses around the world. \nResearch Bazaar Queensland (#ResBazQld) will be a three-day intensive conference where researchers will come together to upskill in ‘next-generation digital research tools and skills’. In the spirit of a marketplace or bazaar\, ResBaz is a highly participatory event where researchers from many different disciplines can learn\, share knowledge and skills\, and have fun! \nWho should attend? Researchers at ALL levels from ALL disciplines. PhD candidates\, research Masters students and early-career researchers are especially encouraged to attend. Research technologists and research software developers who support researchers to do their job should also come along! ResBazQld fees are kept low-cost to be affordable for most researchers. \nSessions at this year’s ResBaz will offer a brief practical introduction to a broad selection of topics and tools related to digital research practice relevant across the disciplines. \nQCIF (ADSN partner organisation) is one of the main organisers of ResBazQld 2023. \nThe website for this year’s ResBazQld is still in development\, but save the date in the meantime.
