Be part of a pioneering initiative at CSIRO’s Data61, contributing to the National Quantum Computing Testbed — a new $5.9M facility at the University of Queensland. CSIRO is seeking a Research Scientist/Engineer to help develop next-generation quantum technologies.

In this role, you’ll work within the Quantum Systems Team to:

  • Drive research that lowers the barriers to quantum computing adoption.
  • Develop secure, scalable quantum software and hybrid quantum-classical systems.
  • Engage with partners across industry, academia, and government to deliver real-world solutions.

Help shape the future of quantum computing in Australia through open-access innovation and responsible tech development.

Your duties will include:

Under the direction of Team Leader, Senior Research Scientists and Engineers, this Research Scientist will:

  • Conduct innovative research in quantum software platforms, focusing on quantum compilers, algorithms, and hardware-agnostic solutions.
  • Collaborate across CSIRO and with external academic and industry partners to drive impactful research and technology development.
  • Produce high-quality research outputs, including publications, patents, and technical presentations at conferences.
  • Develop and demonstrate research prototypes at key events, applying design thinking and impact-focused methodologies.
  • Analyse and manage complex datasets using relevant quantum and data science techniques.
    Engage in continuous professional development and adhere to CSIRO’s policies on conduct, safety, and diversity.
  • Support proposal development and contribute to new research directions aligned with strategic priorities.

About the job:

  • Location: Brisbane, Queensland (Negotiable)
  • Salary: AU$118,102 per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation
  • Tenure: Specified term of 3 years
